CLIENT OVERVIEW

Our client is a large Academic medical center providing primary and specialty care. They are one of the largest recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health among independent U.S. hospitals and currently oversee 661 research projects, including both laboratory-based research and clinical research programs in areas such as substance use disorder, violence intervention, infectious disease, geriatrics, and hematology/oncology.

CHALLENGE

The organization’s research team launched a complex clinical study focused on improving care management strategies for patients with Alcohol Use Disorder. The initiative aimed to evaluate how coordinated care management, population health oversight, and targeted clinical decision-support interventions could influence patient outcomes and long-term engagement in treatment.

To operationalize the study, the team needed specialized Epic expertise to translate research concepts into actionable workflows and decision-support tools within the EHR. This included designing and building structured reporting capabilities that would enable care managers and population health leaders to monitor patient progress, identify risk indicators, and support data-driven interventions.

Without the ability to effectively embed research protocols and insights into Epic, the organization risked delays in study execution, limited visibility into patient populations, and missed opportunities to improve care delivery through evidence-based decision support.

APPROACH

Given the complexity of the research initiative and the critical role that clinical decision-support and reporting capabilities would play in study outcomes, the organization recognized the need for dedicated Epic expertise embedded within the project team. To ensure research concepts could be accurately translated into scalable EHR workflows, the organization partnered with Talent Groups to secure an experienced Epic Ambulatory and Healthy Planet consultant.

Working as an integrated member of the research team, our consultant participated in recurring planning sessions to bridge the gap between clinical research objectives and technical system design. They provided strategic guidance on how proposed care management interventions and decision-support concepts could be effectively configured within Epic, while also supporting the development of reporting structures aligned to study metrics and population health management goals.

This collaborative, hands-on approach enabled the organization to move from conceptual research design to practical system implementation with greater speed, clarity, and confidence.

IMPACT

Through close collaboration with clinical, research, and population health stakeholders, Talent Groups’ Epic-certified consultant helped ensure that complex study requirements were accurately translated into actionable decision-support tools and reporting capabilities within Epic. By facilitating direct clarification with NCQA representatives on a particularly nuanced HEDIS measure, the consultant helped the organization align system configuration with nationally recognized quality standards, preserving the integrity and validity of the research initiative.

As a result, care managers and population health leaders gained improved visibility into patient populations, enabling more informed interventions and more consistent application of evidence-based care strategies. The enhanced reporting and decision-support capabilities established a scalable foundation for ongoing research, quality improvement, and population health management efforts.

Ultimately, the initiative supported the organization’s broader goal of advancing treatment approaches for individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder, strengthening data-driven care delivery and contributing to improved long-term patient outcomes.
